Since August 1, 2026, buying a semiautomatic rifle, shotgun, or gas-operated handgun with a detachable magazine from a Colorado dealer requires a sheriff-issued eligibility card and a safety course. Firearms you already own are unaffected.

Is my firearm on the list?
Search the Colorado SSF list by manufacturer and model. If a firearm is not listed, a short questionnaire walks the categories the statute defines.

What is my county doing?
Eligibility-card status, application channel, and fee for all 64 county sheriffs. Every row carries a source URL and a last-checked date.

No program published is a finding, not a gap in the research: the requirement itself is state law, and at the counter the dealer still checks your eligibility in the Firearms Safety System. Where a sheriff has published nothing, calling the office is the only way to get an answer, and your county page carries the number and what to ask.
